Proudly Serving York Region, Toronto and the GTA
Ontario’s demerit point system records unsafe driving on your licence, and too many points can mean suspensions, fines, and higher insurance rates.
At Traffic Ticket Advocates, we’ve spent over 30 years helping drivers fight traffic tickets, reduce demerit points, and protect their records from escalating penalties.
What Are Demerit Points in Ontario?
The Ontario licence demerit point list is set out under the Highway Traffic Act and applies to all licence classes, including G1, G2, M1, M2, and full G/M drivers. Points are added to your licence when you’re convicted of traffic offences, and they remain on your driving record for two years.
How the Demerit Point System Works
Offences carry 2 to 7 points depending on severity.
Full licence holders:
- 9–14 points: Mandatory interview (with a fee).
- 15 demerit points or more: Automatic suspension (30 days for a first time, 6 months for repeats).
Novice drivers (G1/G2/M1/M2):
Any 4+ point offence or licence condition breach triggers escalating sanctions: 30-day suspension, then 90 days, then cancellation.
Points expire after two years, but paying a ticket adds them immediately. Fighting a ticket may dismiss or reduce the offence.
Common Traffic Offences That Add Demerit Points
Part I offences may seem minor but still carry points. Others, including Part III Offences, are major violations with lasting consequences.
Minor Driving Offences in Ontario
- 2 demerit points: Not wearing a seatbelt, failing to signal.
- 3 demerit points: Speeding 16–29 km/h over the limit, distracted driving, failing to yield.
- 4 demerit points: Speeding 30–49 km/h over, following too closely.
Major Driving Offences in Ontario
- Demerit points: Failing to stop for a school bus.
- 6 demerit points: Careless driving, stunt driving, speeding 50+ km/h.
- 7 demerit points: Failing to remain at the scene of a collision, refusing a roadside breath test.
Novice Driver Demerit Point Penalties
Novice drivers face stricter rules. A single 4-point offence, such as a speeding ticket or careless driving charge, can suspend your licence and set back your progress in the graduated licensing system.
Demerit Point Penalties and Consequences
The real impact of demerit points is what they lead to: suspensions, fines, and higher costs to drive.

When to Seek Legal Advice
If you’re approaching 6 points, facing a novice driver sanction, or worried about insurance hikes, it’s time to get advice.
You have just 15 days after a ticket to decide whether to fight it, but the team Traffic Ticket Advocates is on your side.

Fighting Traffic Tickets & Reducing Demerit Points
Fighting a traffic ticket is often the only way to stop demerit points from going on your record. A strong defence can mean charges are withdrawn, reduced to a lesser offence, or dismissed completely.
Can Demerit Points Be Removed?
Points stay on your record for two years from the date of the offence. The only way to avoid them sooner is to fight the ticket in court and have the charge withdrawn or reduced to a non-point offence.
